  • Hungary is holding a 10-9 lead over ROC with under three minutes left in the bronze medal game of the women’s water polo.

Hungary just hit the post with ROC a player down. There is time for ROC to tie the game.

Japanese judokas achieved a record gold medal tally at the Tokyo Games, but it was France’s Teddy Riner who stole the show in the home of judo in the end.

Of the 14 weight categories for the men and women, Japan won nine golds, a silver and a bronze in the individual contests in Tokyo - a record haul since judo became an Olympic event for men in 1964 and for women in 1992.

But Japan quickly faded after suffering a shock loss against Riner-led France 1-4 in the mixed team event on the final day of the contest.

“This is the reality in the world. The world of judo is evolving fast,” Kosei Inoue, the head coach of the Japanese judo team, said.

“I’m really frustrated as we ended up in the second place and couldn’t live up to expectations, although I’m the happiest man on earth to have worked with such wonderful athletes.

“Japanese judokas have a big job to do if they want to outperform their Tokyo Games results at the 2024 Olympics, he added, when the French team will again be led by Riner at home.

Japan’s Mone Inami has won her playoff with New Zealand’s Lydia Ko for the silver and bronze medals at the women’s golf.

Inami finished with par and Ko missed her attempt to match her.

The pair were seen cheering for each other as they took their final putts.

Inami made a run in the third and fourth rounds to end up with a medal, Ko has a strong event throughout.

Australian golfer Hannah Green will keep Paris 2024 in her sights after a fifth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics.

Green burst back into the event with a hot run in the final round but she will forever wonder what could have happened if she had made a birdie putt on the 17th hole that would have put her into medal contention.

A weather delay stopped Green as she was preparing to putt, she missed it upon the restart.

USA’s Nelly Korda went on to win the gold medal.

“I felt like the birdie on 10 was key. I really needed something positive to happen,” Green told Channel Seven.

“I think the putt on 14 to eagle opened the door a bit. I was pretty disappointing to bogey the last.

“If you’d told me at the start I’d be in contention for a medal I’d have taken it.

“I feel like I have had rain delays that have stopped my momentum.

“Who knows what would have happened if I had made the putt on 17.”

Green hopes she can return to the Olympics in Paris but knows much can happen in golf and life between now and then.

“I’m happy with the week,” Green said.

“Paris is in the back of my mind. Who knows what will happen in three years.

“It’s definitely a goal of mine. We have the Scottish Open next week and British Open so it’s great to start the week with a good finish.”

The delay seemed to suck the energy out of Hannah Green’s push for a medal, with a missed birdie putt at 17 followed by a bogey at 18 on the resumption.

She finished on 13 under par, a 68 for the day, in a tie for fifth place.

Like Cam Smith in the men’s tournament, Green made a good run at it until that break.

Her playing partner Mone Imani of Japan also bogeyed the last, which delivered gold to world number one Nelly Korda of the USA on 17-under.

That’s two golf gold medals to the Americans after Xander Schauffele won the men’s tournament.

Korda claimed victory after tapping in for par on the 18th hole.

Korda became the leader on -17 after Japan’s Mone Inami ended with a bogey on the 18th hole.

Inami and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko are tied on -16 so will play off for silver and bronze.

The world has got closer and closer to Team USA when it comes to men’s basketball but France couldn’t get past them today.

Kevin Durant scored 29 points, most of them in the first half before USA held off a late French run to win their fourth straight gold medal 87-82.

The French are disappointed and they will forever rue shooting just 18 of 29 from the free-throw line in this match.

NBA stars Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert led France with 16 points each.

Australia and Slovenia play for the bronze medal tonight at 9pm AEST tonight.

Hannah Green’s putt on the 17th was more like four metres and it slipped by to the right.

She gave Mone Inami a good read though, and the Japanese sank hers from three metres to tie the lead with Nelly Korda watching from the fringe.

That missed putt, the first shot played after the non-inclement weather delay, will make it almost impossible for Green to get into the medals.

Lydia Ko has just tapped in for birdie, so Green needs a miracle.

NBA superstar Kevin Durant looks to have taken the USA to a fourth straight men’s basketball gold medal despite a late fightback from France.

Durant has 27 points but France has closed to within 85-82 with 10 seconds to play after two missed free throws.

USA has the ball but they can’t afford another turnover. USA led by 10 points with three minutes to play.

Somebody in the golf officials’ tent has actually stepped outside and discovered there is no rain and little wind, let alone any thunder or lightning.

So play will restart at 2.15 AEST after a needless 40-minute pause.

The situation on course is this. Both of the final groups are on the short par-4 17th. Just to confuse things further, the Inami-Pedersen-Green group called the Korda-Ko-Ashok group to hit up.

When they resume, Green (-14) and Inami (-16) have two-metre putts for birdies. Pederson (-12) is on the edge of the green with either a long putt or chip for eagle.

Ko (-15) drove the green and has about four metres for eagle.

And Korda (-17) and Ashok (-15) are both facing the similar lob out of the rough that green and Inami just played. That’s a lot to take in, but the long and the short of it is that Nelly Korda is still in the box seat for gold, Hannah Green needs to sink this birdie putt for a shot at a medal, and there are still multiple permutations possible for all six players.

It’s a blanket finish….and would’ve been even more exciting if it was played without this delay!

Good afternoon. I’m Roy Ward and I’ll be taking over the blog for the afternoon and evening from my colleague Vince Rugari.

There is heaps going on right now including the end of the men’s basketball gold medal game and Hannah Green’s fight for a medal in the final round of the women’s golf.

Please feel free to keep leaving comments and let’s get into it.

USA is up seven points with just under four minutes to go in the men’s basketball - it could be a tight finish.
