Desperate Afghans squeeze between wall and containers at airport in sweltering heat

Devastating images have been captured showing desperate Afghans penned in like animals between shipping containers and concrete in the sweltering heat.

Men, women and young children can be seen herded in as they endure an agonising wait to be evacuated out of Kabul.

It comes after the new Taliban rulers said that Afghan nationals will no longer be allowed to leave the country.

Thousands of people remain trapped in the "no man's land" at the airport, with their only option to wait or return and face the unknowns of Taliban rule.

Reporters in the area have said the stench of sewage filled the air as panic began to set in with the looming final deadline for US forces manning the evacuation effort on August 31.

Gut-wrenching new images from Hamid Karzai International Airport captured by an ITV News team show the hardship that many refugees trying to flee are enduring at the airport.

The Mail Online reports that people entitled to return to the UK remained stuck at the airport and were struggling to make progress.

Mohammad Tanai, 29, had gone back to his native Kabul from his home in Luton to visit his wife and had booked a return flight for September.

After trying to flee early with his young daughter he has been sleeping in his car near the airport for nearly a week trying to reach Brit officials and remains stuck.

He said: "I came here with my mum for a holiday and we left my dad and brothers at home. I have witnessed beatings, people getting hurt as others rush in.

"As soon as crowds move the Taliban start firing their weapons and it is scary. I want to leave but I also donĂ¢€™t want to leave my wife here as I can see the situation."

Ayesha, from Manchester, had gone to Afghanistan to attend a wedding and said she now is unable to come back home.

She said: "I have been coming to the airport for the past three days as me and my children are terrified of the Taliban roaming in the streets with guns."

The Taliban seized control of Afghanistan last Sunday, with US President Joe Biden admitting militants' lightning rise to power was quicker than western leaders predicted.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has told Afghans to stop travelling to Kabul airport as no evacuations would be permitted after the August 31 deadline.

Speaking after an emergency meeting of the G7 earlier, Boris Johnson said the US President had denied his request to keep American troops at Kabul airport.

He said allied forces would "go on right up to the last moment that we can", and "we're confident we can get thousands more out".

Joe Biden confirmed the US is on track to complete its evacuation plan to withdraw troops from Afghanistan by August 31, in Tuesday's press conference after hours of speculation.
